Betty LaDuke: Art Reflecting Life
Oregon painter and printmaker Betty LaDuke has worked form her Ashland studio for more than 40 years.
LaDuke's vibrant work reflects her extensive travels since the 1950's. Those travels deepened and enhanced her appreciation of world culture and women's art, and more recently created an extraordinary relationship with Heifer International. The file includes on-site footage in Rwanda. Betty LaDuke's art reflects life on several continents. 60 min.

Betty
LaDuke is one of the most dynamic and relevant artists of the late twentieth
century living and working in North America today. Her vision encompasses
both traditional and ever-changing life styles in many non-western countries
throughout the world. Her quest for the real truth of life has taken her
form Mexico to Borneo and from Africa to Papua New Guinea. This video, reflecting
the evolution and dynamic vibrancey of her life and work, reveals not only
her creative experise, but her extraordinary world view. |

Africa Between Myth and Reality
An
upbeat, contemporary view of African life emerges in Betty LaDuke's paintings,
drawings and etchings inspired by ten years of travel in Africa. Her experiences
with village life, artist cooperatives and artists have inspired her images,
a composite of myth, magic and reality. She transforms rites of passage
and daily life experiences into vibrant colorful rythms that capture the
essences of Africa's rich and diverse cultures and traditions. In this
vides filmed by Brian Varaday, we are transportred from LaDuke's Oregon
Studio into marketplaces, religious shrines, communal celebrations, womens's
associations and are communities. |

American women artists of diverse heritages; Lois Mailou Jones, Mine
Okubo and Pablita Velarde. Their powerful personal paintings, drawings,
lithographs, and murals reflect their experiences as Native, Asian and
African American women.

This
video focuses on the aesthetic development of twelve artist-figher in
Eritrea, nourtheast Africa. Their contemorary art movement is unique as
it was initiated in a war zone by the Eritrean People's Liberation Frount
or EPLF during their 30 year struggle for liberation from Ethiopian control.
Before their long war concluded victoriously in 1991, a Culture Unit was
formed in their base camp and 28 fighters, including five women, were
selected to train as artists. Between major offensives they created drawings,
paintings and posters, therir personal documentation of war, suffering
as well as compassion and hope.
